Research & Development

R&D underpins our entire business

PGG Wrightson Seeds is one of New Zealand’s largest investors in Research and Development investing, in conjunction with our research partners, more than $18 million annually.

Our research and development programmes are aimed at breeding cultivars which solve problems for our end-users and developing management packages for both effective seed production and for end users. Our sales staff are farm systems experts who consistently feed market insights back to our research and development teams.

Plant breeding and cultivar evaluation is carried out on most of the crop, pasture, maize, cereal and turf species used in New Zealand. To achieve this, we partner with leading researchers around the world and locally we have three long term partnerships with AgResearch and with Plant and Food Research. These local partnerships reflect our major research priorities and include;

  • Grasslands Innovation Limited – pasture breeding
  • Endophyte Innovations – endophyte research and development
  • Forage Innovations Limited – brassica breeding and forage cereal breeding

In addition, we participate in various industry research projects and government-funded research programmes around specific opportunities and areas of interest.
