Summer Crop

Green Globe can be used as a summer feed option on dairy farms to help maximise milk production. Plant 2/3 of the crop area in Barkant® turnips and 1/3 in Green Globe turnips at the same time, in different paddocks, to provide a summer feed that can be grazed from 60–120 days. This is because the early maturing Barkant turnips can be grazed from 60-90 days and the later maturing Green Globe turnips grazed from 90-120 days after planting.

Using this system, farmers don’t have to worry about the quality of their turnip crop declining because they are trying to maintain an early maturing cultivar for too long, and they don’t need to worry about reduced yields by having to graze a later maturing crop too early. Green Globe and Barkant turnips complement each other very well.

Late Autumn/Winter Feed

Green Globe turnips are ideal for late autumn/winter feed in more challenging environments. Planted in summer they can be grazed 90-120 days after sowing, they do not require a specific ripening period. There are a number of situations where they can be incorporated whether it is as part of a development plan i.e. breaking in country, lower fertility soils or more challenging topography.

Geoffrey Young
“Green Globe turnips are reliable in country not fertile enough for swedes and have the ability to hold feed quality through to August for in-lamb ewes”, says Geoffrey. He runs sheep and beef on the 5500 ha Mataura River high country property, Cattle Flat Station. Green Globe turnips are sown in late December and are grazed in early spring.
