Grasslands Pacific - a reliable performer
For around 15 years Grasslands Pacific perennial ryegrass has been a reliable performer, especially on harder country, says Murray, who farms near the shores of Lake Waihola, between Outram and Milton
. The 1500 hectare hill country property lambs 9000 romney ewes and calves 550 beef cows.
Pacific perennial ryegrass is used on hill country with lower fertility and tougher conditions, such as dark faces, while Extreme perennial ryegrass is used on the better country and flats.
In its first year, Pacific perennial ryegrass is used to finish lambs, then it becomes part of the normal pasture rotation, grazed by all types of stock. "We strip graze it in two-day shifts behind a hot wire over the winter and it bounces back well. Pacific keeps ticking over, even in winter."
